DYM Italia meeting at Onè

(english and italian / inglese e italiano)

We left, backpack in hand, towards Onè to meet other youth that, as us, share dominican values and principles. We came back, backpack in hand, to our Bologna, being conscious of having had an experience that went beyond our expectations.

We, dominican youth group from Bologna, reborn last november thanks to Fr. Davide Pedone, have had the enormous pleasure of having the opportunity to participate for the first time in the meeting of dominican youth of Northern Italy that took place at Onè on may 20-21.

International Congress for the Mission of the Dominican Order

By:  Andrew Abberton (Dominican Young Adult/Molloy Chapter)

IDYM at Mission Congress. Rome January 2017 2

From January 17th through the 21st, over 600 members of the Dominican Family from all over the world joined together to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the order and to reflect on the past and think towards the future of the mission of the order. The congress brought together people of all different walks of life, languages, cultures, ages, ideas and beliefs. All parts of the Dominican Family were present in order to discuss and reflect on the theme phrase “Sent to Preach the Gospel”. The conference aimed not to answer questions, but to create conversation and spark contemplation and to generate new questions about what mission means in the 21st century and for future focus and direction.

Prot. 73/16/573 IDYM

St. Dominic wanted to share his preaching work with people of all ages and conditions. The last general chapters emphasize that young people are not only passive subjects of our preaching but - and especially - partners of this same preaching.

The members of the Dominican Youth Movement (IDYM) have established and developed in several countries; live their belonging to the movement and the Dominican Family in various ways, in dialogue and permanent sharing with the culture of each country or region, but having the same desire to devote themselves to preaching (cf. ACG Caleruega 1995, 97C; ACG Bologna 1998, 161-164). The groups also experience prayer, study and fraternal life.

It is from the celebration of the Chapter of Trogir in 2013 that the idea of a Congress FOR the Mission of the Order was proposed as an important moment of the Jubilee celebration of the 800 years of the confirmation of the Order in 2016. The Congress will be somewhere between the two dates close to the approval and confirmation of the Order« of preachers »: according to the two papal bulls complementary to each other in the confirmation of an Order « of preachers » :  see that of 22 December 1216 with the confirmation of Honorius III and that of 21 January 1217 which formally designates an « Order of Preachers ». This is why the International Congress for the Mission will be precisely in the space between these two dates, 22 December 2016 and 21 January 2017, as solemn closing of the Year of the Dominican Jubilee and, especially, as a point of departure for a new path for the mission of preaching of the Order. The Congress’ main theme will be determined by the General Chapter for the Jubilee year celebration of the 800 years of the Order: SENT TO PREACH THE GOSPEL (Cf. ACG Trogir 50).
