IDYM Membership Criteria

1. Acceptance of the IDYM Vision Statement
Groups of young people with Dominican inspirations who accept the IDYM vision statement will be admitted to form part of the International Dominican Youth Movement.
2. In accordance with the suggestions from the Chapter of Bolonia, IDYM groups should keep in mind the following criteria

1)  Participation in the Dominican mission of preaching and teaching the Word of God.

2)  Active participation and collaboration in the concrete carrying out of the local and universal mission of the Order.

3)  A government that expresses the democratic and communitarian tradition of the Order.

4)  Community in life and prayer, unity in prayer with the whole Order; formation and study for the ministry of salvation and apostolic works to which they  have been called.

5)  Knowledge of and acceptance of the history of the Order; its origins  and spirituality.

6)  A commitment, at least temporarily, to the mission of the Order, expressed as a profession, promise or other form of formal commitment.

7)  As well as being admitted by the Superior Generals in the case of the  movements of the associates to the congregations of sisters, and by the  Master of the Order, in the case of groups associated to the friars or others who  desire to belong to the Order, they should be recognised by  the commission/ council/secretariat of the Dominican Family of the area.

3. All groups who wish to become part of the IDYM agree to the following

1.  Take an active part in the Organisation at an international level.

2.  Send a delegate from their group to the Assembly of IDYM, who will act as spokesman for the group, helping in the production of common lines of action, formation programs, production of common projects, etc.

3.  Aid the functioning of the International Structure by submitting information about their group to the secretariat, financially aiding the maintenance of the International Co-ordination, etc.

International Structure of the IDYM

1. Representatives Assembly

1.  Will be held every two years and will be attended by a maximum of two representatives from each country. At least one of them must be a lay person.

2.  The groups of each country who are affiliated to the IDYM will elect the representatives from their country.

3.  The delegates from each country assume the responsibility of ensuring that the information on the decisions taken at the Assembly reaches the local groups.

4.  The representatives from each country will be a link with IDYM in the time between two Representatives Assemblies.

5.  The regional co-ordinators, elected by the countries of the area, will also take part in the Assembly.

2. International Commission.

      The International Commission is composed by

  • Executive secretary present
  • Former (previous period) executive secretary
  • Delegated chosen by the friars
  • Delegated chosen by Dominican sisters International
  • Three members (of wich at least 2 must be lay) chosen by the Representatives assembly

The members of the International Commission agree to take part in the meetings of the Commission and to assume the responsibilities conferred on them by the same, within the boundaries of the Statute.

The International Commission will meet at least once a year to:

  • Prepare Representatives Assemblies and International Meetings.
  • Implement the decisions of the Representatives Assembly.
  • Receive new groups to the IDYM.

4. International Meetings

A World Meeting will be held every two years. The principal objectives of these meetings will be to:        
+ Propitiate a space for Dominican formation, community life and prayer, in which the young people from all the groups can take part, sharing their experience of the charisma of the order. 
+ Set lines of action and common mission projects.       
+ Make the IDYM known.

The venue and host country for the International Meetings will be chosen by the Representatives Assembly based on the suggestions made by the countries who are prepared to organise it.

The Representatives Assembly will be held during the World Meeting.

In the organisation of the international meetings,  the necessary amount will be provided to ensure the participation of all countries.


5. International Secretariat

The International Commission, having heard the opinions of the Representatives of the countries will elect the International Secretary.

The duties of the Secretary are:

  • To take part in the meetings of the International Commission.
  • To represent IDYM whenever it is needed.
  • To keep up to date information on all the groups.
  • To Gather supportive documentation for the groups.
  •  To maintain the IDYM web page.
  • To ensure that the groups receive information.
  • To help in the organisation of International Meetings.
  •  To manage the search for financial resources for the IDYM.
  •  To keep the IDYM accounts up to date.

The International Secretariat is the reference point for the IDYM for information and documentation. It's a service for all the IDYM groups.

The secretariat will inform the Commission on the financial state and the management of the service every time it meets.

The International Executive Secretary will be elected for a period of three years. The secretary will not be eligible for re-election after two consecutive periods in office.

The International Executive Secretary will reside in Rome, the Headquarters of the IDYM's International Office.
